Delhi New Year Horror: CCTV Footage Shows Woman Was Dragged By Car For An Hour

A 20-year-old girl was killed in Delhi after her scooter was hit by a car and then dragged for a few kilometres, the police informed on Sunday.

In horrific details that have emerged from the case, again highlighting the issue of women’s safety in the national capital, a decade after the Nirbhaya case, police said that and even the back side of the victim was ripped off, along with her clothes, as the car dragged her for nearly 20 km.

An eyewitness said the car allegedly repeatedly drove on the same road, taking multiple U-turns.

New CCTV footage corroborates this account, showing a Baleno car making a U-turn on a road in Kanjhawala in North West Delhi, where the eyewitness, runs a confectionary shop.

The footage, recorded at 3.34 am, shows the car returning to the spot where the body was found.

The witness said the car driver dragged the body of the girl, which got entangled in the undercarriage, for 18 to 20 km, and drove that way for about one-and-a-half hour.

‘It was 3:20 am…I was standing outside the shop when I heard a loud noise from a vehicle about 100 meters away. Earlier I thought it was a tire burst. As soon as the car moved, I saw a body being dragged. I informed the police immediately,’ he told news agencies.

‘I tried to stop them many times, but they did not stop the vehicle. For about one-and-a-half hours, they carried the girl’s body for about 20 km,’ he noted.

The eyewitness was of the opinion that this could not have been an accident, as he chased the car with his motorcycle and was in contact with the police.

After the body fell from the car, the accused fled, according to him.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has called the incident ‘shameful’ and said he hopes the culprits get the strictest punishment.

‘What happened to our sister in Kanjhawala is very shameful. I hope that the culprits will be punished severely,’ he tweeted.

The car was traced, and the five occupants were caught from their houses. Police said the body was dragged for 12 km.

Mr Kejriwal later said he has requested the Lieutenant Governor to take ‘exemplary action’ and to show no leniency, even if the accused have political connections, as many have pointed out.

‘Spoke to Hon’ble LG on Kanjhawala incident. Requested him to take exemplary action against culprits, strictest sections of IPC shud be slapped against them. No leniency shud be showed even if they have high political connections. He assured that he will take strong action,’ he tweeted.

The accused, who have been arrested, have claimed the car windows were up and there was loud music inside the car, so they did not notice the body, and fled the spot when they realized what had happened.

Based on the post-mortem report, fresh charges could be added against the five accused, Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Sagar Preet Hooda said at a press conference.

The accused have been booked on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, causing death by negligence, and criminal conspiracy.
