Lt. Gen. Manoj Pande becomes first engineer to be appointed Army Chief

1 min read

Lt. Gen. Manoj Pande will take over as the next Army Chief on April 30.

Lt. Gen Pande has previously served as the Eastern Army Commander before being elevated to the post of Vice Chief of the Indian Army, succeeding Lt. Gen. CP Mohanty in February.

The scheduled retirement of current Army Chief General MM Naravane is to take place at the end of April.

Lt. Gen. Pande is the senior-most officer in the Indian Army after Gen. Naravane and was thus considered the most obvious choice for the top job.

The appointment comes amid speculation that Gen. Naravane could be named as the next Chief of Defence Staff.

The post of the CDS has been vacant since December last year after General Bipin Rawat passed away in an accident late last year.
